Scientific Research

If you give permission for transplantation, you automatically give permission for research into transplantation. This research is only necessary when after removal an organ or tissue suddenly proves to be unsuitable for transplantation, despite thorough preparations. This is set in the Dutch Organ Donation Act. Research of this kind aims to enhance knowledge on transplantation.

If you choose to give permission for transplantation (option 1), but you do not want the organs or tissues that prove to be unsuitable for transplantation to be used for research into transplantation, you can make your objection known using the form Bezwaar tegen wetenschappelijk onderzoek (Objection to scientific research). This form is only available in Dutch. Objection is only possible if you choose option 1, if you give permission for transplantation

Scientific research focusing on transplantation should not be confused with donating your body to science after your death. A body that is donated to science will be used for medical-scientific teaching and research purposes. You can obtain more information on this subject from a university anatomical institute. An address list is available via the public information number +31 (0)900 – 821 21 66 (local rates). Usually it is not possible to be a donor and also donate your body to science. This is because most anatomical institutes only accept "complete bodies".
